Biography

Susanta Kumar Chakraborty is the professor of zoology, Vidyasagar University,born on 31st,July, 1960,has been in active research since 1982 after completion of his M.Sc. in zoology from the Calcutta University. His research preferences centre around on the subjects ecology, coastal, mangrove, fresh water wetlands, rivers and estuaries, with an emphasis on biodiversity and ecosystem dynamics. He has been also associated with action research on the Integration of rural biotechnologies for the environmental management, ecorestoration and livelihood generation. He did his M. Phil. in environmental science and Ph.D. in marine science from the Calcutta University in the years 1984 and 1992 respectively. He has been imparting teaching spanning a period of three decades mostly in the postgraduate level covering different aspects of zoology in general and ecology/ environmental science in particular. So far, he has successfully supervised the Ph.D. thesis of 34 researchers, published around 180 research papers in different reputed international and national journals, written a couple of books, and a number of book chapters, completed more than a dozen of research projects including consultancy projects on environmental impact assessment, visited several countries such as Australia, U.S.A., Hong Kong, Belgium, France, and Bangladesh in connection with his academic commitments. He has delivered more than hundreds of lectures in different seminars/ symposia/ conferences/ workshops/refreshers courses etc. in different parts of India and abroad highlighting his scientific thoughts and research achievements. Besides, he has shouldered a number of administrative responsibilities in his own university such as, dean, faculty of sciences, head of the department, member of the executive council, member of the finance committee, chairman of college governing bodies etc. and also in other universities as an expert member of selection committees, academic bodies, etc. alongside contributing as an expert member for several government departments like U.G.C., I.C.A.R. etc. He has been associated with a number of scientific bodies in India as life members, and reputed journals as a member of editorial boards. He has received a number of awards in recognition of his research commitments.
