Biography

J. Santiago Mejia is a Research Scientist interested in the development of solutions to medical problems, in particular those caused by arthropod-borne pathogens. He holds an MD degree from Universidad CES in Colombia and a PhD degree in Immunology from Instituto Politecnico Nacional in Mexico. He had the opportunity to study the immunobiology of several arthropod-borne disease during post-doctoral fellowships at Tufts University, New England Biolabs and Colorado State University. He is the founder of Ectocrine Technologies, a company dedicated to raise awareness about a new perspective on human physiology that consider the salivary glands of hematophagous arthropods as essential source of molecules to human well-being and development.

Research Interest

His research interest focused on arthropod saliva as potential target of transmission-blocking vaccines, and more recently, potential health benefits derived from exposure to the bite of healthy mosquitoes. He proposes that the complete removal from human dwellings of hematophagous arthropods might be the main etiopathogenic factor for the long list of chronic non-communicable diseases afflicting residents of arthropod-free environments.
