Biography

TAO, Yuan-Xiang, PhD, MD, MSc, is Professor of Anesthesiology, Cell biology & Molecular Medicine, Neurology & Neurosciences, and Physiology & Pharmacology, Vice Chair of Research in Department of Anesthesiology, Rutgers, The State University of New Jersey, New Jersey Medical School. Dr. Tao graduated from Nanjing Medical University, China, in 1986 and received his PhD from Shanghai Brain Research Institute, Chinese Academy of Sciences, China, in 1997. He completed his postdoctoral training at the University of Virginia in Charlottesville. In 1999, Dr. Tao, as Instructor, joined the faculty of the Department of Anesthesiology and Critical Care Medicine at the Johns Hopkins University School of Medicine in Baltimore. He was promoted to Assistant Professor in 2001 and Associate Professor in 2005 at Johns Hopkins. Beginning in 2013, Dr. Tao accepted his current position as Professor with Tenure and Vice Chair of Research in the Department of Anesthesiology at Rutgers. Dr. Tao is a highly accomplished investigator in the pain research.


Research Interest

The long-term goal of his research is to investigate novel molecular and cellular mechanisms that underlie chronic pain, chronic opioid tolerance, and hyperalgesia, and to apply these findings to the prevention and/or treatment of these disorders.
