Abstract

Forensic Nursing Science is a branch of science that is a combination of knowledge and practice of nursing health care, the criminal justice system and Forensic Sciences including Forensic Medicine; when applied to criminal investigation and judicial system of a country. It is a well developed discipline in the advanced countries especially in the USA. In India efforts have been done by Indo pacific Academy of forensic Nursing Science to develop in the Indian subcontinent where a lot of awareness has been created amongst the stakeholders and it has shown its results in the form of initiation of the academic postgraduate programs in one of the Universities of India. Efforts are still going on to get it introduced in the undergraduate program as a separate module which resulted in the proposal of a module on forensic nursing by Nursing Council of India but still the efforts are required to get it implemented.

Scope of the forensic nursing science is really vast especially as Sexual Assault Nurse Examiner and as a member of the Sexual Assault Response Team. The role of the forensic nurse in the emergency and mortuary will be especially helpful to gather the biological evidence and for the effective investigation of the crimes at the crime scene. In addition to this, there are multiple avenues where forensic nurses can play a very crucial role which will be deliberated in the presentation.
