Biography

Dr. Navam Hettiarachchy, a FELLOW of the Institute of Food Technologists’ is a University Professor in the Dept. of Food Science at the University of Arkansas, Fayetteville, USA. She earned her B.S (Chemistry Madras University), M.S (Biochemistry, Edinburgh Medical School, Scotland), and Ph.D. (Biochemistry, University of Hull, England), and a Postgraduate diploma in Human Nutrition (ICMR). She was a faculty in Peradeniya Medical school, Sri Lanka, a Senior Scientist and project leader at Nestle R&D, Connecticut, USA, the Director of Food Science at North Dakota State University and now risen to a University Professor in the Department of Food Science, University of Arkansas, USA. Integrating basic and applied protein research with value-added nutraceuticals from co-products including bioactive, new and innovative product development, and food safety are her research areas. She has established research on bioactive proteins and peptides from natural sources that have anti-cancer, anti-Alzheimer’s, anti-diabetes II and anti-obesity effects. Her research efforts led to the creation of a start-up company, “Nutraceutical Innovations” LLC in the USA. The Product development teams she advised and coached won numerous prestigious awards at national and international competitions. Professor Hettiarachchy has published over 155 refereed journal articles, 380 presentations including 96 invited presentations at national and international levels. Dr. Hettiarachchy as a resource Professor to the Asian Productivity Organization (APO), Japan has trained senior scientists, and higher officials of 17 countries in Agriculture (“Farm to the Table concept”) including value- addition to processing and innovative food ingredients and food product development. In recognition of sustained excellence she has been highly recognized with numerous awards for her teaching, research, and service. She has 6 patents, 3 books edited or co-edited, 20 Book Chapters, and 155 journal articles and over 380 presentations and has been serving as an editorial board member of reputed journals


Research Interest

Her research interest includes bioactive proteins and peptides from natural sources that have anti-cancer, anti-Alzheimer’s, anti-diabetes II and anti-obesity effects. She si very much interested in working on nutraceuticals.
