Track 3: Cardio-Oncology

Cardio-oncology is the intersection of heart conditions in patients who have been treated for Cancer and cardiovascular disease are the leading causes of mortality in many parts of the world. There are several reasons for both diseases occurring in the same patient. Coronary artery disease (CAD) and Cancer share risk factors such as age, use of tobacco and obesity. Other reasons may be the consequences of radio- and chemo-therapy in long-term survivors of malignancy. These treatments have a direct impact on the heart, which require, in some cases, surgical correction. Malignancy can also occur during long-term follow-up after coronary artery bypass graft (CABG). The increase in diagnostic facilities makes the detection of heart disease and treatable cancer also more likely.

Track 4: Cardiac Engineering, Biomimetic and Implants

Cardiac Engineering is gaining importance in reducing the donor-recipient ratio for transplants and also in making better implants for cardiac patients. In the absence of sufficient numbers of organs for heart transplant, alternate approaches for healing or replacing diseased heart tissue are under investigation. Designing biomimetic materials to support these approaches will be essential to their overall success. Strategies for cardiac tissue engineering include injection of cells, implantation of three‐dimensional tissue constructs or patches, injection of a cellular materials, and replacement of valves. To replicate physiological function and facilitate engraftment into native tissue, materials used in these approaches should have properties that mimic those of the natural cardiac environment. Leadless pacemakers and defibrillators, eliminating the issue of blood-borne infections within the device, and the use of smaller technology that can be injected with a needle for monitoring arrhythmias are rapidly moving areas. New technical approaches to ventricular tachycardia are being explored.

Track 5: Cardiac Nutrition and Public Health

The major cardiovascular diseases affecting the developed world have at their core atherosclerosis and hypertension, both of which are profoundly affected by diet and can be approached, at least in part, from a nutritional point of view, as can the increasing “epidemic” of obesity. Malnutrition conditions such as vitamin deficiencies also aggravate cardiovascular non-responsiveness. A balanced nutrition is essential to maintain cardiovascular health. This field is being explored by many researchers, to study the relationship of cardiovascular nutrition with gender, age, lifestyle, work cycle, ethnic background, and other medical conditions.

Track 6: Cardiology Genetics

Cardiology Genetics is important in managing inherited cardiovascular disease in patients and families, including hypertrophic, dilated, and arrhythmogenic cardiomyopathies and inherited arrhythmias. By identifying the molecular etiology of disease, genetic testing can improve diagnostic accuracy and refine family management. However, unique features associated with genetic testing affect the interpretation and application of results and differentiate it from traditional laboratory-based diagnostics. Novel research with gene editing holds great promise in neuromuscular diseases such as Duchenne and Becker muscular dystrophy, which also affects cardiac muscle, and is an emerging trend.

Track 11: Diagnostics, Cardiac Imaging and Nuclear Cardiology

Diagnostics and Imaging is an important step in the management of cardiac ailments. Computed Tomographic (CT) angiography for guiding reperfusion is moving forward in this field. CT angiographic characterization of the lesions would add a new dimension to the anatomic and physiologic relevance of coronary stenosis and should offer superior prognostic determination. CT angiography has started to gain ground as the most important go-to technique at least in people without known CAD. A challenge in the field of imaging is determining its appropriate use. Even though imaging is not adequately employed yet, its escalating cost is a challenge. Refining whether the imaging discipline evolves as a multimodality service or with multimodality imagers or whether there will be niche areas for imaging modalities is another challenge ahead.

Track 14: Case Reports in Cardiology

Cardiology case reports include detailed reports of symptoms, signs, diagnosis, treatment, and follow-up of individual patients. Case reports may contain a demographic profile of the patient, but usually describe an unusual or novel occurrence. Case reports are professional narratives that provide feedback on clinical practice guidelines and offer a framework for early signals of effectiveness, adverse events, and cost. They can be shared for medical, scientific, or educational purposes. A case report is generally considered a type of anecdotal evidence. Case reports and series have a high sensitivity for detecting novelty and therefore remain one of the cornerstones of medical progress; they provide many new ideas in medicine.
