About City

Phuket City is a city in the south-east of Phuket Island, Thailand. It is the capital of Phuket Province. As of 2007 the city had a population of 75,573. It covers the subdistricts (tambon) Talat and Talat Nuea of Mueang Phuket district. Phuket is 862 km (535.6 mi) south of Bangkok. Phuket is one of the oldest cities in Thailand. It was an important port on the west of the Malay Peninsula where Chinese immigrants first landed. The old buildings in Phuket town indicate its former prosperity. They were constructed when tin mining was an important on the island. The architectural style, called "Sino-Portuguese", is European mixed with Chinese modern. Characteristic is a single or two-storey building with a narrow front compensated for by considerable depth. The tiles, doors, perforated windows and other details are all influenced by Chinese and European styles mixed together. On 13 February 2004 the town was elevated to city status (Thesaban Nakhon).
The major religion is Buddhism. The Buddhist temples in the city are attractive destinations for national and international tourists. Along the streets some Hindu temples depicting the statues of Ganesha and Brahma can also be seen.

How to Get to Phuket:
By Air: Phuket International Airport is the second busiest airport in Thailand. Millions of passengers each year visit Phuket to enjoy a wide range of tourist services, natural beauty of the world famous Phuket beaches
By Water: During summer season (May through October) ships dock at Ao Makarm port (deep-water port with 1 pier) located approx 8 km (5 ml) from Phuket Town. When ships stay in Phuket overnight, they usually dock at Ao Makarm and tender their passengers to Patong and back.
By Rail: Getting from Bangkok to Phuket by train is another option. There is no train service direct to Phuket so what you’ll actually have to do is take a train from Bangkok to Surat Thani and then a bus the rest of the way.
By Road:  The most affordable way to travel from Bangkok to Phuket is by bus, but with affordability do come some issues. First is the length of time it takes – this could be anything from 13 to 16 hours.
