In general, there is a less than a one percent chance of developing a malignant CNS or brain tumor over the course of one's lifetime. The risk increases once the age increases. Among people under the age of 20, 4.5 per 100,000 persons will be diagnosed with a malignant brain tumor. This very rate rises to 57 per 100,000 persons after age 75. Brain tumors are the second-leading cause of death due to cancer for children and teens under age 20, females under 20 years of age, males under 40 years of age.

Neurosurgery refers to the medical specialty dedicated to the diagnosis, prevention, treatment, and rehabilitation of disorders that affect our nervous system i.e spinal cord, brain, peripheral nerves, and extra-cranial cerebrovascular system. Paediatric neurosurgery, Functional neurosurgery, Neurovascular surgery, Traumatology, Neuro-oncology, Skull-base surgery, Spinal surgery are the different categories of neurosurgery.

Session 4: Spine Surgery and Spine Disorders

The human spine is a structure of 33 bones joined by ligament and muscle extended from skull to pelvis. It connects between the brain and peripheral nervous system which is the information connecting pathway. Spinal cord is protected by the three layers of tissues called meninges. Vertebrae is classified into thoracic, lumbar, cervical and coccygeal. Each vertebra in the spine is protect by invertebral disc. Spinal cord consist of 31 pairs of spinal nerves that transmits the signal to and fro between body and spinal cord. Any damage to the spine causes the loss of sensor or motor function.

Session 7: Cognitive Neurology

It is a scientific study of neural mechanism underlying cognition. Cognitive Neurology is concerned with the diagnosis and treatment of diseases that affect memory and other ‘cognitive’ faculties (such as language, perception, planning-ability and social comportment). This combines the theories of cognitive psychology & computational modeling with experimental data about the brain. Cognitive neurology is a logical investigation of neural system basic discernment. It is worried about the determination and treatment of infections that influence memory and other 'subjective' resources, (for example, dialect, discernment, arranging capacity and social comportment). Intellectual neuroscience is at the crossing point of brain research and neuroscience, yet it likewise covers with physiological brain research, neuropsychology and subjective brain science. This joins the speculations of subjective brain research and computational demonstrating with test information about the mind.

Importance & Scope

Globally, Neurology holds a position in the various medical centers of the world which varies from complete nonexistence to high and complex development. Development of the field of neurology by different types of clinicians, the rapid invasion of psychiatry, the late appearance of neurosurgery and the important recent advances in neurophysiology and neuro-anatomy, all help to account for this variability and demand a reconsideration of the scope of neurology.

Neurological reports examine the patient's health history with special attention to the current condition. The patient then takes a neurological exam. Typically, the exam tests mental status, function of the cranial nerves (including vision), strength, coordination, reflexes, and sensation. This information helps the neurologist determine whether the problem exists in the nervous system and the clinical localization

In 2016, the World Health Organization estimated that neurological disorders affect up to one billion people worldwide. In fact, neurological diseases make up 11 percent of the world’s disease burden, not including mental health and addiction disorders. The cost of these diseases is high across the globe. For example, the European Brain Council estimated in 2010 that neurological diseases in Europe alone cost one trillion dollars a year. Data from 2005 indicate that neurological illnesses affect more than 50 million Americans annually and cost more than $500 billion to treat. In addition, mental disorders strike 44 million American adults a year at a cost of $148 billion.
