Dubai is a city and emirate in the United Arab Emirates known for luxury shopping, ultramodern architecture and a lively nightlife scene. Burj Khalifa, an 830m-tall tower, dominates the skyscraper-filled skyline. At its foot lies Dubai Fountain, with jets and lights choreographed to music. On artificial islands just offshore is Atlantis, The Palm, a resort with water and marine-animal parks.
Tipping: round up to the nearest note for taxi drivers and leave 10% in restaurants if service was good (and has not already been charged to the bill). When traveling within Dubai city, use the metro system, which has two lines, Red and Green. Taxis are the best option for areas not covered by the metro, which include Bur Dubai and Deira. Dubai is a Muslim country and visitors should dress conservatively when appropriate. Swimwear is accepted on the beach but not in the malls, public parks, restaurants, and mosques. In the city, women should always cover shoulders and preferably legs as well.
