Biography

Dr. Kshitij Shankhdhar (age 40) is a Diabetologist from Lucknow, India. He has specialized in diabetic foot care and diabetes education. He did his medical graduation in India followed by post graduate trainings and fellowships in European countries. He did his fellowship in diabetic foot at Manchester, UK (Prof AJM Boulton) and observed clinical Podiatry at London, UK (Prof Mike Edmonds). At Oxford, UK he attended the Robert Turner Clinical Research Course (Prof David Matthews) along with Scientist Training Course (Prof Per Henrick Groop) at Helsinki, Finland. He is recipient of Albert Renold Fellowship, given by the European Foundation for the Study of Diabetes. He was selected for the prestigious Gary Sibbald International Scholarship by the Canadian Association of Wound Care. In 2011, at Birmingham, UK he received the 'Highly commended - Innovations in diabetic foot ulcers award' given by Wounds UK. He is the only Indian doctor to hold the fellowship of APWCA (American Professional Wound Care Association) and was selected as a member of the Medical Advisory board of APWCA. He is the only Indian doctor to hold the fellowship of APWH (Academy of Physicians in Wound Healing, Winston-Salem NC 27106). Dr. Kshitij Shankhdhar established the first diabetic foot clinic of north India called Lucknow Diabetic Foot Care Clinic and Research Centre under L.K.Diabetes Centre, Lucknow, India. For 15 years, Dr. Kshitij Shankhdhar has been actively involved in diabetes care and diabetic foot amputation prevention. Dr. Shankhdhar holds the credit of inventing (in the year 2000) - The Samadhan System of Offloading the diabetic foot. His work in the field of Diabetic foot care has been selected for oral presentation at most esteemed international conferences in Diabetology, organized by associations like The International Diabetes Federation, American Diabetes Association, Canadian Diabetes Association, European Association for the Study of Diabetes, Diabetic Foot Study Group (EASD), Wounds UK, Diabetic Foot Global Conference and many others in different parts of the world. In the year 2009, he solely conducted a two day workshop on diabetic foot, organized by the International Diabetes Federation, at Seychelles, Africa in which he trained a number of African doctors and nurses. On 23rd April, 2015 he delivered a 40 minute key note lecture at International Diabetic foot conference at Novosibirsk, Russia. In April 2016, he was faculty speaker at 7th Abu Dhabi wound care conference and also Chairman of a session. Recently, on 14th July; he was conferred with State-of-the-art diabetic foot clinic award for his pioneering work in the field of diabetic foot care in India. This was handed over to him by Dr. N.C. Schaper (Nicolaas), Department of Internal Medicine/Endocrinology, University Hospital Maastricht, The Netherlands during the National Conclave on Diabetic Foot, held at Mumbai, India. Diabetes leads to one amputation every 20 seconds. 85% of these amputations are preventable. Such specialized diabetic foot clinics play a major role in amputation prevention. Dr. Shankhdhar is the Working President of the UPMA - Uttar Pradesh Madhumeh (the word madhumeh means diabetes in Hindi language) Association in the state Uttar Pradesh, India. He had successfully established a first of its kind, UPMA's Medical College of Diabetology, for a structured education program for people with diabetes. He strongly believes in the words of Dr. Elliott Joslin (regarded as the father of modern diabetes care), the person with diabetes who knows the most lives the longest.
