Session 01: Growth and Development

An important aspect of parenting is understanding the changes your child will encounter during growth and development. As children advance through a sequence of growth stages they may face several challenges and relatively common problems.
Although no children are exactly alike, there are universally accepted theories of human development and growth patterns most share. Children not only vary in physical appearance, but they also express differences socially and mentally, as well as through personality and behavior. How children interact with others and respond to their environment also changes throughout the developmental stages. Generally, these changes occur in an orderly manner; however, the rate of progression varies among children.

Session 02: Infectious Diseases

Major causes of death among children vary by age. Children under 5 are especially vulnerable to infectious diseases like malaria, pneumonia, diarrhea, and tuberculosis. For older children, non-communicable diseases, injuries, and conflict pose significant threats.
Despite being entirely preventable and treatable, common infectious diseases are still killing young children in large numbers. Pneumonia, diarrhea, and malaria were responsible for approximately 30 percent of global deaths among children under the age of 5 in 2019. Children in the world’s poorest regions are disproportionately affected, by infectious diseases.

Session 03: Nutrition for children

Healthy eating in childhood and adolescence is important for proper growth and development and to prevent various health conditions. Healthy eating can help individuals achieve and maintain healthy body weight, consume important nutrients, and reduce the risk of developing health issues. Schools are in a unique position to promote healthy behaviors. Most US children spend an average of 6 to 7 hours a day at school, which is a large part of their waking hours.1–3  This section highlights the importance of nutrition services, physical education and physical activity, sleep education, and social and emotional climate in schools.

Session 04: Importance of Mental Health

Childhood and adolescence are critical stages of life for mental health. This is a time when rapid growth and development take place in the brain. Children and adolescents acquire cognitive and social-emotional skills that shape their future mental health and are important for assuming adult roles in society. The quality of the environment where children and adolescents grow up shapes their well-being and development. Early negative experiences in homes, schools, or digital spaces, such as exposure to violence, the mental illness of a parent or other caregiver, bullying, and poverty, increase the risk of mental illness.

Session 05: Physical Activity

Physical activity is any bodily movement produced by skeletal muscles that require energy expenditure. Physical activity refers to all movement including during leisure time, for transport to get to and from places, or as part of a person’s work. Both moderate- and vigorous-intensity physical activity improve health.
Popular ways to be active include walking, cycling, wheeling, sports, active recreation, and play, and can be done at any level of skill and for enjoyment by everybody. Regular physical activity is proven to help prevent and manage non-communicable diseases such as heart disease, stroke, diabetes, and several cancers. It also helps prevent hypertension, maintains healthy body weight, and can improve mental health, quality of life, and well-being.

Session 06: Sanitation and Hygiene

Growing up in a clean and safe environment is every child’s right. Access to clean water, basic toilets, and good hygiene practices not only keeps children thriving but also gives them a healthier start in life.
Despite COVID-19 putting the spotlight on the importance of hand hygiene to prevent the spread of disease, three billion people worldwide, including hundreds of millions of school-going children, do not have access to handwashing facilities with soap. People living in rural areas, urban slums, disaster-prone areas, and low-income countries are the most vulnerable and the most affected.
