Inevitably, production, use and disposal will lead to releases to the environment. Wastewater treatment streams, landfill and combustion of products containing nanomaterials are means through which they may end up in the environment, although it is most likely that they do so as modified forms from their primary counterpart. In addition, some nanomaterials are used in environmental remediation applications and as such they are applied as primary nanomaterials to the environment.The environmental fate and behaviour of nanomaterials has been recently reviewed by Klaine et al. 2008. Knowledge from colloid science can provide information on the likely fate and behaviour of nanomaterials. The behaviour of nanoparticles in the environment is expected to depend not only on the physical and chemical character of the nanomaterial, It is generally known that small particles tend to aggregate or agglomerate to eventually become associated with other dissolved, colloidal and particulate matter present in the environment.
